The Hurston & Hughes Literary Circle Kickoff

Tuesday was filled with laughter, lots and lots of laughter, as the readers kicked off the third year of reading in the Afro-Diaspora.

The youth were split into middle school and early high school groupings. They read and discussed works by Countee Cullen, Audre Lorde, and Langston Hughes. The middle school table spent an entire half-hour discussing what Audre Lorde meant with the last line of her poem, Naturally.

We are so excited about this inquisitive group of young readers ready to delve into literature and question the absence of their presence in realistic, not stereotyped, stories.
